CONCERT BY THE CROATIAN GUITAR QUARTET
(Croatia)
Zoran Dukić •
Petrit Çeku •
Maroje Brčić •
Tvrtko Sarić
The Croatian Guitar Quartet was founded in 2016, marking the culmination of a long-standing friendship between Zoran Dukić, Petrit Çeku, Maroje Brčić, and Tvrtko Sarić. After graduating from the Academy of Music in Zagreb under the same professor, Darko Petrinjak, each musician continued to pave his own artistic path.
A shared passion for ensemble playing led to the formation of one of the most prestigious ensembles in Croatia. To date, they have performed numerous concerts across Croatia and appeared in Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, North Macedonia, Kosovo, and Japan. The quartet has also performed with various orchestras and is a regular guest at many music festivals. The Croatian Guitar Quartet performs under the patronage of the prestigious American company D’Addario.
Their CD and DVD “Guitarrismo”, produced and released in 2020 by Croatia Records, as well as their 2022 CD titled “Bagatelles for Domestic Use” (Cantus), were nominated for the prestigious Porin Award in multiple categories. For their concert at the 2017 Dubrovnik Summer Festival, they were honored with the Orlando Award, presented by Croatian Radiotelevision, for the best concert performance.
The Croatian Guitar Quartet is an ensemble of explosive virtuosity and lush lyricism. Their concert repertoire spans nearly all musical eras, with special focus and deep commitment to works from the Croatian musical heritage. Through their expressive and evocative performances, they have inspired many Croatian composers to dedicate works to them, thereby enriching the repertoire for guitar quartets.

CLOSING CONCERT OF THE FESTIVAL BY THE ANDALUSIAN GUITAR QUARTET
(Spain)

Andalusian Guitar Quartet
On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Manuel de Falla (1876–1946)
The Andalusian Guitar Quartet (CGA) presents a tribute concert to the Cádiz-born composer, celebrating the decisive influence he exerted on 20th-century Spanish and Ibero-American music.
At the heart of the program is the Cuatro piezas españolas (Aragonesa, Cubana, Montañesa, and Andaluza), an early masterpiece by Manuel de Falla, performed in an arrangement for guitar quartet by Javier Riba. This chamber music version vividly highlights the timbral richness, rhythmic vitality, and expressive nuances of these miniatures, in which the fundamental elements of Falla’s unmistakable musical language are already clearly present.
In dialogue with Falla’s music, the program also features works by composers closely linked to him through their aesthetics, generation, or artistic spirit. Ernesto Lecuona, whose music blends Spanish traditions with a distinctively Caribbean sensitivity, transforms the legacy of Falla’s Cubana into a vibrant homage to Andalusia in his suite Andalucía, where folkloric color, lyricism, and rhythmic drive converge.
The program also highlights the figure of Rodolfo Halffter, one of the most prominent representatives of Spanish musical exile, who had a defining impact on Mexico’s modern musical life. His ballet Don Lindo de Almería—presented here in a previously unpublished arrangement for guitar quartet—shows a clear kinship with Falla’s El amor brujo, whose expressive and rhythmic innovations left a deep mark on Halffter’s musical language.
The concert culminates in two dances from Falla’s ballet El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat), a work in which the composer uses his brilliant orchestral imagination to evoke the plucking gestures of the guitar and the modal colors of Andalusian folk music. Collectively, this program blends tradition and modernity, Spain and the Ibero-American world, paying tribute to one of the most universal figures of Spanish music through the warm, diverse, and evocative sound of the guitar quartet.
The CGA was founded in 2019 by Andalusian guitarists Francisco Bernier, Antonio Duro, David Martínez, and Javier Riba, all of whom boast distinguished international careers as both concert artists and educators. The quartet made its debut in September of that same year at the Cartuja Center in Seville, performing Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto Andaluz to mark the 10th anniversary of the city’s Guitar Festival.
Since then, Spanish and Spanish-inspired music has been at the core of the quartet’s repertoire, featuring works by Albéniz, Halffter, Falla, Lecuona, and Scarlatti in transcriptions created specifically for this ensemble. Thanks to its unique sound and technique, the guitar is capable of evoking and coloring music that, although conceived outside its natural domain (such as piano and orchestral music), was often directly inspired by the very nature of the instrument. In this sense, the guitar quartet expands this potential by multiplying textures and broadening acoustic boundaries.
The CGA is committed not only to the Spanish music of the past but also to that of the present, commissioning new works from contemporary composers. David del Puerto’s “Cuerdas del viento” for soprano and guitar quartet—based on poems by Federico García Lorca—was recorded with soprano Sachika Ito (Contrastes Records) and performed at venues including the Córdoba Guitar Festival. Similarly, the premiere of César Camarero’s Transparente / vacío / ciego / alado, dedicated to the quartet, is among their upcoming plans.
Their collaborations also include the renowned flamenco guitarist Juan Manuel Cañizares, with whom they performed the Concierto Mozárabe. In 2025, the quartet entered a new chapter with the addition of the outstanding guitarist Marco Socías, who succeeded David Martínez, bringing new artistic energy and interpretive horizons to the ensemble.
The CGA’s upcoming projects include their debut with the Royal Symphony Orchestra of Seville at the Teatro de la Maestranza (Rodrigo’s Concierto Andaluz), as well as preparing the Concierto de Cienfuegos for four guitars and orchestra by the recently deceased Spanish composer Lorenzo Palomo.
Hailed by critics as one of the greatest guitarists of his generation, Francisco Bernier has built a stellar career over the years, performing in over 500 concerts across Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia. He has appeared at prestigious venues such as the Théâtre Mogador in Paris, Oji Hall in Tokyo, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, and Merkin Hall in New York. A finalist in the New York Concert Artists Guild, he holds more than twenty international awards. At just twenty years old, he became the first and only Spaniard to win First Prize at the highly prestigious Michele Pittaluga International Guitar Competition in Alessandria. He obtained his Doctor of Arts degree from the F. Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw. He was recently appointed an Academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel de Hungría in Seville. He balances his active concert career with teaching as a Professor of Guitar at the Conservatorio Superior de Música Manuel Castillo in Seville. He also serves as the Artistic Director of the Seville Guitar Festival, the founding President of the record label Contrastes Records (UK), and the Executive Director and creator of the Master in Guitar program at Pablo de Olavide University in Seville.
Javier Riba is highly regarded for his dedication to historical guitars (frequently performing on original instruments by Antonio de Torres and Vicente Arias), his efforts in reviving unjustly forgotten works from the Spanish repertoire (by Pahissa, Halffter, Sanjuan, etc.), and his outstanding work as a transcriber (his CD “Isaac Albéniz, la guitarra soñada” received unanimous acclaim from international critics). He has premiered several guitar and orchestra works written specifically for him, including compositions by Angelo Gilardino, David del Puerto, and Juan de Dios García Aguilera. Angelo Gilardino wrote of him: “Javier Riba is a guitarist who combines an extremely beautiful, moving, and crystal-clear tone with a sense of phrasing capable of revealing every aspect and value of the pieces he performs”. He currently serves as a Professor of Guitar at the Rafael Orozco Conservatory of Music in Córdoba, where he combines his teaching duties with concert performances, research, and composition.
Described by critics as a performer possessing “extraordinary musical talent, exquisite sensitivity, a vision rich in culture, and impeccable technique” (Scherzo Magazine). Through his extensive artistic and educational career, he has firmly established himself in today’s musical and academic spheres. He graduated with an Extraordinary Award and continued his training under masters such as Leo Brouwer, Alberto Ponce, Manuel Barrueco, and notably David Russell. A prizewinner in numerous performance competitions in Spain, France, and Germany, he regularly performs on prestigious stages worldwide as a soloist and chamber musician, collaborating with renowned ensembles such as the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, the Spanish National Orchestra, and the Seville Symphony Orchestra. He has recorded extensively for RNE, Canal Sur TV, and labels including Deutsche Grammophon and Lindoro. A frequent collaborator in theater, film, and flamenco productions, he complements his artistic activities as a Professor of Guitar at the Manuel Castillo Conservatory of Music in Seville.
Born in Málaga, Marco Socías studied under C. Gallardo, A. Company, José Tomás, H. Käppel, J.M. Moreno, and David Russell. A prizewinner at several international competitions, he has performed in nearly forty countries. He has appeared at major concert halls such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Berlin Philharmonie, under the baton of illustrious conductors like Sir Neville Marriner and Josep Pons. As a soloist, he has performed with the Radio Sinfonie-Orchester Berlin and the Rotterdam Philharmonic, among others. He has recorded ten CDs for prestigious labels such as Opera Tres, EMI, Harmonia Mundi, and Deutsche Grammophon. Both audiences and critics consistently praise his exceptionally direct communication, solid technical mastery, and highly refined artistic sensitivity. He currently serves as a Professor at Musikene (Higher School of Music of the Basque Country) in San Sebastián.
