The Venti Guitar Trio was established in 2014 in Pécs, Hungary. Its members are Zsófia Ritter, Balázs Kormos and Álmos Tóth. Within two years following the formation of the Trio they started to participate at international competitions. In the course of three years, they were awarded with ten international prizes and they have been acknowledged in Hungary and abroad as well, and as a result thereof the Trio has gained an active role on Hungarian and international classical music stages. Their major achievements so far:

  1. 1st prize, 3rd International Guitar Competition Vale-Balle (Croatia), 2017
  2. 1st prize, 2nd Danubia Talents International Music Competition, Vác, Hungary, 2017
  3. 1st prize, 17th National Guitar Competition at the Guitar Festival of Szeged, Hungary, 2016
  4. 2nd prize, GFA Convention and Competition (Miami, USA), 2019
  5. 2nd prize, 5th Aschaffenburg International Competition for Chamber Music with Guitar (Germany), 2019

One of the major goals of the Venti Guitar Trio is to expand the repertoire for guitar trios, thus they search for lesser-known pieces written for guitar trios, and they also make transcriptions from works originally composed for keyboard or orchestra. In February 2018 they were awarded the prize for the best transcription at the Aschaffenburg Guitar Competition. In their own repertoire the Trio pays especial attention to the involvement of Hungarian classical music, as well as the safeguarding of cultural traditions. At the concert they will play the works of Hungarian composers from the Renaissance to contemporary pieces.

Carlo Marchione, winner of seven major prizes at international competitions, has been part of the leading group of classical guitarists of the last 30 years. Carlo has performed as a solo guitarist, with orchestras and chamber music ensembles. Nowadays he is a professor and regularly leads master classes at various European Conservatoires as well as being a regular guest at Festivals throughout Europe.

For his outstanding contribution to the development of the guitar, in 2017 he has been awarded with one of the most prestigious international prizes for the didactic, the Golden Guitar. “About Carlo Marchione I’ve already written all possible good things one can write about him. Also in this concert, he has confirmed to us his greatest inspiration and his perfect art of interpretation” “Standing ovation for the completely humble guitar master, one of the best … Touching how tenderly he unlocks the melody from the strings of his guitar with extreme precision and lyrical expansion… Baroque works congenially edited.” He started taking guitar lessons from the age of 10 with by Master L. Cauzzo, and later on with L. Gallucci. In 1976, he entered the local Conservatorio Santa Cecilia in his native town, passing the entrance exam in 1st place out of 100 applicants. There he studied with Master Mario Gangi, graduating with honours in 1983.In the course of his career he has been awarded many top prizes in International competitions (Ancona 1979/80, “L. Legnani” Parma 1981, “M. Giuliani” 1982, “Ville de Sablé” 1985, Gargnano 1989, “N. Paganini” 1991, “Città di Latina” 1992). Besides that, he has inspired composers such as A. Carlevaro, C. Domeniconi, S.Iannarelli, K.Vassiliev, A. Ourkouzounov, G.Drozd and John Duarte to write pieces for him. Always looking for new ideas for his repertoire, he discovered almost forgotten compositions which come out like jewels through his genial transcriptions. Highly praised by the press of his editing Violin Fantasies 12 by Georg Philipp Telemann, which is released as a CD and music book. He is a highly distinguished acknowledged seminar senior lecturer in the area of guitar music analysis. He currently teaches at: o Conservatorium Maastricht (The Netherlands). o Pôle Superiour d’enseignements artistiques (apPSEA) in Lille, (France). o Musical Academy “Civica Scuola delle Arti” in Rome (Italy). o Conservatori Superior de Música de les Illes Balears in Mallorca (Spain). o Scuola di Specializzazione post laurea in Beni Musicali in Torino (Italy). Besides these activities, I am also an enthusiastic online teacher, having found with my fiancée the Marchione Online Academy, teaching here top students from all over the world. I am also very active as music publisher, having my own online publishing company, MarchioneMusic Editions, through which we release every month a new guitar transcription.

7:30 PM – CONCERT

Pablo Márquez, guitar

Regarded as one of the most accomplished and complete musicians of our time, Pablo Márquez elevates the guitar to rare levels of expression, combining spontaneity and deep intellectual rigor. The extraordinary extent of his repertoire, which embraces the full historical spectrum from the very first lute and vihuela publications to the most recent and sophisticated contemporary works – which are often dedicated to him – is the subject of a unanimous admiration.

His name is always associated with a unique sound, as evidenced by the numerous recordings for ECM and other labels. Each of his registers has become a reference, whatever the repertoire engraved. This is illustrated by awards such as the Grand Prix du Disque Charles Cros or the Prix Amadeus, as well as the countless reactions from the press.

Thus, on the subject of Musica del Delphin, his debut CD with ECM –the first ever classical guitar recording in that label, which caused a sensation in 2007-, the New York Times published: Pablo Márquez makes an eloquent case of Luys de Narváez’s mastery of counterpoint and sense of virtuosity. Regarding his Schubert disc with Anja Lechner, Die Zeit wrote: Anja Lechner and Pablo Márquez enlight the night with Schubert. El Cuchi bien temperado, dedicated to the music of his fellow countryman Gustavo Leguizamón, was among the 100 best recordings (all genres included) of 2015, selected by the American journalist Ted Gioia. His last opus, A joyful brotherhood, which explores the unique friendship of Mauro Giuliani with piano virtuosos Hummel and Moscheles, sparkled the reaction of the Suddeutsche Zeitung: Pablo Márquez and Jan Schultsz have now recorded some of these pieces: they are magical paradises and dream holidays.

His discography also includes first recordings of works for guitar and orchestra such as Chemins V by Berio (with Dennis Russel Davies and the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana), A fuoco by Luca Francesconi (with Susanna Mälkki and the Ensemble Intercontemporain), Hanbleceya by Zad Moultaka (with Lorraine Vaillancourt and the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne of Montreal) and Fénix by Javier Torres Maldonado with Maurizio Grandinetti, Jürg Henneberger and the Phoenix Ensemble. A second live-recording of Berio’s Chemins V with the WDR Sinfonieorchester of Cologne and Jean-Michaël Lavoie was awarded with the prestigious Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik.

Pablo Márquez studied guitar in Argentina with Jorge Martínez Zárate and Eduardo Fernández. At the age of twenty he unanimously won the Villa-Lobos competition in Rio de Janeiro, as well as the Concours de Radio France in Paris, the most prestigious guitar competition of that time. A complete musician, he studied conducting with Rodolfo Fischer and Peter Eötvös, and followed the teachings of the legendary pianist György Sebök, who would deeply mark his artistic development.

His career flourished in more than 40 countries, being acclaimed in the most beautiful halls (Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, National Concert Hall in Taipei, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg…), in major festivals (Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, Ultraschall in Berlin, San Sebastián, Ticino Musica…), both in recital and in partnership with Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Dino Saluzzi, María Cristina Kiehr, Rosamunde Quartett, Anne Gastinel, Mario Caroli. He appears as a soloist with the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Colombia and the Orquesta de Valencia.

He worked in collaboration with the greatest composers of our time, such as Luciano Berio, Mauricio Kagel and György Kurtág. On the occasion of Berio’s 70th birthday, Pierre Boulez invited him to perform the Italian composer’s Sequenza XI, a work of which he has become the favoured interpreter. The New Music being at the center of his priorities, he has premiered no less than thirty works dedicated to him by composers such as Zad Moultaka, Martin Matalon, Fuminori Tanada, Oscar Strasnoy, Ramón Lazkano or Arthur Kampela.

Pablo Márquez is not only a sought-after virtuoso, but also a highly demanded teacher. His class at the Musik-Akademie in Basel is one of the most respected ones and he gives master-classes all around the world. He received the Konex Prize in Buenos Aires in recognition of his career.
