9. International Guitar Festival – Balatonfüred, Hungary

21 June 2014 – 28 June 2014

The Balatonfüred International Guitar Festival is organized for the ninth time in Balatonfüred, a small town with a historic atmosphere on the northern shore of Lake Balaton. The settlement has a history of more than two thousand years, as it was inhabited as early as the Roman era. It became truly significant in the 19th century, when it was considered as one of the most important centres of culture and social life in the country. Famous poets, writers and politicians spent their summers and found recreation here. Its attractiveness is due to its beautiful location, the healing power of its carbonated springs, the fine, aromatic wines grown in the Uplands, the cultural events, and above all, to the hospitality of the people living here.

The Balatonfüred International Guitar Festival was eight organized in 2013 with an audience of 3500 people, which is an excellent result. Generally speaking, this event breaks with the traditional concept of similar events, i.e. they offer programmes for the profession in the first place and the audience only comes second in priority. Our programme pays attention to the expectations of both the profession and the music-loving audience, so there are various styles of music performed at different venues during the festival, with the guitar being a close bond between the performer and the audience.

PROGRAMMES

Evening concerts: in Anna Grand Hotel-Ceremony Hall, Kisfaludy Galery, and the Balaton Leisure Time and Conference Centre, between 21 June and 28 June 2014, starting at 8 o’clock in the evening. The performing artists are regular guests of the great concert halls of the European Union and the world. Their excellent virtuoso technique and special attitude towards music make their concerts unforgettable. We encourage them to include in their repertoires pieces from their homeland, from old to contemporary music. By this the audience will have the chance to have an insight into the culture of the given country and get to know its composers, while the guitar players will have the opportunity to extend their repertoires.

When working out the details of the programme schedule for the festival, we paid attention to offer the widest musical selection possible, so we broke the usual classical music-centeredness of guitar festivals by involving other musical styles as well, naturally, keeping to the same high standards. As a result, classical music, jazz, flamenco, Argentinean tango and world music will all be heard.

Master courses: in Janos Ferencsik Music School, between 22 June and 28 June 2014, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The guitar festival of 2014 offers professional programmes as well for the students and teachers of the guitar. The point in organizing master courses is that the guitar players of various countries spend a week together, make themselves familiar with one another’s culture, exchange thoughts and experience about the world they live in and learn from one another as well as from the professors leading the courses. They can get to know the professors coming from different countries, which might help students decide where or with whom they would like to carry on with their studies and, most importantly, they can receive firsthand information about the education system and requirements of the chosen country. The high standards of the programmes are ensured by famous professors and artists for participants wishing to learn or relax. Within the framework of professional training our students take part in master courses held by guest professors, where they can refine their technique and musical abilities as well as improve their performing skills, for we ensure the opportunity to introduce themselves at several venues. During master courses the next generation of guitar artists will have the chance to gain insight into backstage secrets of teaching and giving concerts, which may offer a lot of experience and a great potential for proficiency for them.

Afternoon concerts: We can give many concerts passibilities for the young guitarists,so during the festival those interested can play the afternoon concerts on the Kisfaludy Pier Stage and many place in the city.

Further information: At the exhibition of score publishers, record companies and instrument manufacturers our visitors can get an insight into the world of international publications and the various methods of instrument manufacturing. The sales and exhibitions provide an opportunity for our participants and visitor to buy all the tools that will help them in their work and advancement.

We will do our best to ensure that everybody can find the entertainment or training opportunity fitting their musical style, interest or age among the programmes of the Guitar Festival.

Venues:

- Anna Grand Hotel – Ceremonial Hall

A well-known building in Balatonfüred with a past going back to 1748. The main hall, which was built between 1877 and 1879, was originally intended for the purpose of a dance hall. After the reconstruction in 2005 the audience is welcomed by a grand concert hall, equipped with an imposing stage and excellent technical equipment.

The wonderful venue offers quality entertainment for 400-500 people.

- Balaton Leisure and Conference Centre – Open Air Stage

The Balaton Leisure and Conference Centre was opened to the public in November 2004. Its Open Air Stage and the auditorium with a capacity of almost 1000 people provide a perfect place for the organisation of the festival.

The Kisfaludy Pier Stage at the Tagore Promenade, which starts at the pier of Balatonfüred, is a place for free concerts every summer.
